Fracking Concerns

Fracking is toxic. You don’t explode oil and gas out of rocks without chemicals. Each company uses a different chemical cocktail, including chemicals known as endocrine (hormone) disruptors and carcinogens. A study out of SUNY-Albany found that half of air samples around shale wells had levels of benzene, formaldehyde, and hydrogen sulfide levels exceeding federally acceptable limits on orders of tens or hundreds-fold.

Fracking pollutes our water. You also don’t explode oil and gas out of rocks without water. The Guardian reports fracking  produced 280 billion gallons of toxic wastewater last year, and this is often injected into rock deep underground.

Fracking isn’t forever. Newsweek report shale wells peak early and their average lifetime is only 8 years.
